"Mr. Vice President – this is not on the script — Lindsey Graham is relieved that you didn’t show up in [Iowa in] January. You may have won the Republican nomination."
American Vice President Joe Biden dropped that choice bit on Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping at a lunch yesterday at the State Department, joking about Jinping’s visit to Iowa after his stop in DC. Graham is a US Senator from South Carolina.
That wasn’t the only Biden zinger from the event with Jinping, who many believe will be the next president of China. On Iowa, Biden joked:
“I told Vice President Xi his visit to Iowa tomorrow will assure him more delegates than I got,” he said, referring to his unsuccessful run for president in 2008.
With Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State and now Republican foreign policy graybeard, seated nearby, Biden cracked:
“As you know, there’s an old Chinese saying: Better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books.”
“Although I read Dr. Kissinger’s book on China, I felt that my trip to your country was at least as important.”
